Manifesto

Fitness is not just about your appearance.

Many of us women spend decades with one dominant fitness focus: don't be fat. Pilates, yoga, spin, barre, weights, running, all of it often gets graded against the same narrow question: did you stay thin?

That is not nothing. But it is a terribly incomplete map of the body. It tells you very little about whether you can push, hang, pull, brace, run, jump, squat, or balance.

In business, they say what gets measured gets managed. Body composition has an enormous measurement infrastructure: the scale, the clothing size, the scan, the mirror. Capability has much less. Most women have never been timed in a dead hang. Many have never counted strict push-ups to failure. A surprising number have no idea what their 5K time is, or whether they can do a single pull-up.

AAFC is an invitation to stop focusing on body composition for a little while, and start focusing on capability instead.

To change the question from:

How does my body look?

to:

What can my body do?

Appearance is not the scoreboard. It may, however, receive some second-order benefits.

Let's turn fitness from a mirror problem into a capability problem.

Which, frankly, is a welcome change.
